Berluc was founded in the mid-1960s as a jazz band. The band's name is derived from the first letters of the founding members' cities of origin, Berlin and Luckenwalde. They first gained attention throughout the GDR in 1978 with the song Hallo Erde, hier ist Alpha, which was inspired by the band members' penchant for science fiction literature.
